No more carbuncles - please!
That's been a great word since Charles Windsor expanded it a little eh?

An article in the 'Gazette this week spoke about the possibility of the Old Nick being knocked down and replaced with flats, presumebly along the lines of the other flats that are appearing all over the town.

I hope this does not happen. I understand the position of the owner, especially with that new carbunkle in front of her but please, someone buy this and preserve it. We have so little left now of a time in this towns history when the architecture was both unique and beautiful.

It's just all going into some developers pockets now. The previously mentioned Carbuncle for instance, has no merit at all in that location. It's horrible!
Ok, It's easy for me with no money to spend everyone else's but I would rather have seen some sort of benefit for the town from a central development like this. That whole area including, the war memorial, the old nick and from the Bank to the carbuncle on the other side of the road is one of the last areas in Carnoustie whers you can still see the history. Put flats up at the Old Nick too and it just disapears completely.

I don't know who decides on town planning, DJ Laing I think and that looks like a Brunton design but what use is housing in that location except to make lots of money for a few people who have no real concern for the heritage, history, or indeed, the future of Carnoustie beyond being a money making pipeline.

A little thought before approval on that development could have enhanced that area of the town. If you look at Ferrier St. itself, it's a perfect 'gateway' street and for as much as I would normaly be against big slabs, a landscaped car park with, perhaps with a small 'park like' area would have been beneficial. The Rest Gardens are at the bottom leading to the beach and the golf course. A good pub in the middle and a lovely old building at the top with a craft/coffee shop. Even the 'unique' sweetie shop round the corner would have benefited from a more open, less mercenary approach.
I think several businessesa have been kicked in the teeth with this including Ceramic Creations and the Nineteenth Hole - thats a nice place too but a lot of visitors to Carnoustie won't even know it exists any more.

I'm not critisising the woman for wanting to sell the Old Nick now, I just don't want to see it being knocked down like so many of the towns old landmarks. I almost cried when the Dalhousie went sad

...ah! the visions I see in my dreams.

Conchie's
I see someone wrote into the G&G this week to mention the ad banners that have appeared at Conchie's.

I noticed this as well. What is going on at that corner?
It's beginning to look a little more like Monte Carlo every day!

These banners are distracting and they obscure some of the sineage. I've not driven past at night yet but I can imagine that these banners will relflect and distract drivers.

I think there is something afoot at this corner. Some sort of commercial development that is dictating the state of play. We'll find out in due course I expect. Paper seems to have been bought off too!! angry

Great Day?
It's a great day isn't it?
Ok, it's drizzly, damp and fairly cold. However, I just took a walk across the old dump and saw lots of snowdrops, the crocuses begining to open, the daffodils are showing some yellow and the primroses are on the way. There are catkins and buds showing on the trees and the birds are picking up sticks in preference to looking for food.
All in all a good Spring morning. smile

I think they killed all the rabbits again. I've not seen any for a few weeks now and I was pleased to see quite a few running around previously. I think it's DJ Laing and a couple of people in Bruce Drive that are responsible for this though rather than a need to protect young trees! angry
A lot of fresh molehills though and I've noticed a couple of hawks that I've not seen before. Not close enough to tell what they are but definitely hawk behaviour. I've heard an Owl too but not caught sight of it yet.

Meanwhile, back in cloud cuckoo land.
I'm pleased to see that people are picking up after their dogs. However, I'm a little less pleased to see what they are doing with this. I keep forgetting to take my camera but the ground and bushes near the 'entrance' to the dump are strewn with little bags of poop. That is just brainless as far as I'm concerned. If you are going to do that at least empty out the bags. it might stink a little but at least it will biodegrade naturally.
These little bags are there for ever and there are hundreds of them!! angry
Note to council: Dog poo bin needed in Lochend Road!!

Democratic or financial?
I was a little disappointed to read this in last weeks G&G
quote:

As far as this newspaper's campaign goes, we live in a democracy, and a democratic decision has been reached.

No Ghandi's back there then.

As far as I'm concerned, the campaign continues. One death is enough and well, It's exactly as it was when the newspaper started its campaign. The "democratic decision" has not changed that.

Ok, I'm a cynic but there is something not right about this whole affair.

It seems to me that the projected costs and the level of work proposed greatly exceeded the need - New Bridge!!?????. Where did that come from??
And those projected costs immediately allowed the more thrifty amongst us to take a stand based upon those figures.

I'm still calling for change, despite the "democratic decision" but I'm not asking for a new bridge or a Conchie's by-pass. I'd just like to see the two sharp bends attended to and some new reflective chevrons or something put in place to make negotiating this bend a little easier and with greater visibility.

There are more people using that area now too and I think pedestrian safety will have to be looked at as well. There is the caravan park and the Downs! - What was it I heard about the Downs recently.......?? I wonder if that.....?? :o

Aliens?
New Google map images appear to show a strange ethereal image embedded in a field behind Carnoustie.

What is the purpose of this strange embryonic figure? How was it made? who by? and why?

These are the questions being asked tonight!!

doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo!
